Somnus FX

Client

Portfolio site · VFX studio · live

The machine builds the pages. The studio decides how its work looks.

The challenge

A visual effects studio in Querétaro had spectacular work and nowhere to show it properly. The material arrived as mockups, intro animations, a brandbook, and lots of video.

The approach

I read everything and wrote a design brief before building. I made a prototype, took the studio's feedback in short rounds, and rebuilt until they said "that's it." Plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with no build step: a video-driven site needs nothing more, and the studio can maintain it.

The system

  1. 01Studio material

    • Mockups
    • Brandbook
    • Video
  2. 02Design brief

    • What shows, and how
  3. 03Prototype

    • Pages assembled from the mockups
  4. 04The studio decides

    • Feedback each round
    • Which projects go live

    ↺ Back to the prototype

  5. 05Live

    • Spanish and English
    • One page per project
Short rounds: the studio sees, comments, and decides before anything goes live.

The boundary

The agent decided

  • Assembling pages from the mockups.
  • Tuning spacing and behavior.
  • Checking that videos loaded.
  • Checking that links and both languages worked.

The studio and I decided

  • Which projects to show (one under NDA was removed entirely).
  • How each section is named and looks.
  • What goes live and when.

Result

A published portfolio on its own domain that looks like the studio, not a template, in two languages, with one page per project.

What I learned

Short rounds with the client beat one big initial design. And clients decide better with something they can see than with a description.
